Paul on what to expect from the a-ha deluxe editions

Interview with Paul Waaktaar Savoy from back in May.

" Question: What can we expect from the forthcoming reissues of your first two albums, Hunting High and Low and Scoundrel Days?

Paul Waaktaar Savoy: Everything has been lovingly mastered from the original tapes. On top of that, we’ve added all the demos, which for my money were sometimes better than what we ended up with. There is also a large selection of unreleased songs from that era that we never got around to recording. There are also a few of the original extended mixes and some live performances from our first tour."

Oslo Rådhusplassen: Watch
Winner of the first a-ha million: Shining.
The audience voted the jazzmetal band Shining as winner of the first a-ha million.

- "I am pretty sure Shining can be noticed abroad, we hope this money might contribute in helping them to be heard. The band has got something unique, and there should be sitting some filmmakers in Hollywood drooling for grabbing these guys", Furuholmen says to VG Net.

Little guitar of big importance to a-ha

All guitar tracks on a-ha’s new (and last) single “Butterfly, Butterfly” are actually played with a tiny so-called G-Sharp guitar! - Being Paul Waaktaar Savoy’s first choice. He has for long tested this new guitar, which is produced in Norway by Øivin Fjeld.

-“ I have, after all, got quite a few guitars to choose from, so I have to admit the surprise was big, even with me, when I found out this tiny Norwegian guitar became the first choice on all guitar tracks on ‘Butterfly, Butterfly’, Paul says.

According to Dagbladet do as well Magne Furuholmen and Morten Harket love this guitar, and it is already in use on a-ha’s farewell tour on songs like ‘Summer Moved On’, ‘Crying in the Rain’ and ‘Early Morning’. Morten says the guitar has almost become a part of the a-ha sound now.

Øivin Fjeld is proud a-ha is using this guitar, along with other famous guitarists like Eric Clapton, guy Fletcher, Mark Knopfler, Scotty Moore with more.

What makes this guitar special is the strings being 15 inches shorten than on a standard electric guitar. The sound is warm and smooth...

Paul and Morten cheating with rocket fuel!

Did you know the guys were cheating in the race in the “Take on Me” video? Paul is actually putting rocket fuel in the petrol tank of Mortens bike and obviously Morten won the race. That is why the other two men are after him.

See earlier blog post questioning why those motorcycle villains are so angry and after Morten: here.

So, there is actually more to the “Take on Me” video story than we do actually see! I have been told a comic book is telling the whole story… meaning, the comic book in the video does exist for real??
And Paul is a lot naughtier than we could ever imagine... hehe

(Big thanks to Mark for this information!)

a-ha Butterfly lyrics

Butterfly, butterfly
Flying into the wind
You can be sure of it
That's no place to begin

Overthinking every little thing
Acknowledge the bell you can't unring

Tomorrow, you don't have to say what you're thinking
You don't have to mean what you say
Butterfly, butterfly

Flutter in to the skies
Butterfly, butterfly
Their molecular cries

Chrysalis dreams waiting on the fifth instar
These stained glass wings could only take you so far
You don't have to say that it matters
You don't have to turn something in
Stay with it through thick and thin

Butterfly, beginButterfly, butterfly

Tomorrow, you don't have to mean what you say
Left without a reason to stay
Comes the last hurrah
Here's our last hurrah

Butterfly, butterfly

You can be sure of it

Butterfly

The ring is closed... (Reviews of a-ha's Butterfly)

About Butterfly, Butterfly (the last hurrah)

VG

"Melancholic farewell".

“The ring is closed when a-ha is saying farewell, after 25 years in the business, in the same way as they entered the international pop arena.

“Butterfly, Butterfly (The Last Hurrah)” has a clear relationship with “Take on Me”.

"A swan song just growing and growing by several listenings".

Dagbladet

"Worthy, but not the song a-ha will be remembered for"

See article in full: DB

Oslo Puls

"A text line like ”here’s our last hurrah” explains the occasion, there is the country’s biggest music success soon disappearing. At the same time you can read a clear reflection from a sentence like “tomorrow you don’t have to say what you’re thinking”. This line is performed almost like liberation by vocalist Harket". Source

Want an a-ha poster?

Let's celebrate! More than 5000 visitors has dropped by the ‘a-ha fan café’ blog for a cuppa and the latest news on a-ha! The traffic has rapidly increased lately. It looks like the blog has actually turned into being quite popular, or is it a-ha drawing more and more attention? No matter what, this makes me really happy, and all the time spent feeling worthwhile!

So, to celebrate this milestone, and a-ha (as this year is all about): the first 20 ones to the mill will get an a-ha poster for free! (Official ‘Foot of the Mountain’ poster). Mind though, you will have to pay P&P (self-cost). I am sorry I can’t cover the expenditures from my own pockets. I believe you all know where you are living, so please choose correct from the drop-down menu :-) These posters are meant for the loyal fans of a-ha, so surely no selling on ebay, thanks.

I have never put a PayPal button into a blog before, so let’s see if this works!? (If not, I’ll figure out something else). Just let me know in the case of problems.

Have a nice day!

Best Regards

Morten Harket: "Our songs are like children…"

Morten Harket was interviewed by German Bild back in May.

What to expect from your Farewell Tour?

Morten answers this tour is very special for the fans, but also for the band. He does not want to reveal too much, but tells it is a reflection of their 25 year long career. He adds they are of course playing their biggest hits, but not just.

The journalist wonders whether they do get tired of playing the songs over and over again.

Morten answers they are absolutely not getting bored. He explains the songs are like children, they are steadily developing. At each concert, they do sound a little different.

The journalist wonders whether Morten does taste local beers on tour.

Morten answers he occasionally does, but with moderation as he cannot stand so much.

The journalists asks whether Morten will be glad when ending the a-ha chapter after a year on tour.

Morten answers this is not the end of a-ha. They do finish their active phase, but their songs will remain.

Another review of a-ha's Stadtallendorf concert... Key words: Pop-kings, top class performance, excellent vocal, first class concert, deafening cheers and thunderous applause, spectacular stage and light show, a-ha has written pop history - even in Stadtallendorf! This despite of: thunder and lightning, rain and violent storm, the band going on stage one hour late (actually one week late)... Grab a copy of the review here: Giessener-Allgemeine

Morten Harket: "I am here against doctors advice..."

a-ha’s rather intense touring is at times a challenge to Mortens voice. Morten Harket in Kiel 01.06.2010: "I am here against doctors advice, but I want to be here and it is wonderful to see you all here!". Watch Morten was also losing his voice back in March: Watch

hehe. Magne Furuholmen messing up the ending there. All of a sudden Early Morning is turned into Take on Me! Magne is trying to row back in, just running a little short of keys! This was the last a-ha concert for a few weeks. Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy are now having a well deserved tour break.

"A perfect show..."

- despite the heavy rain. a-ha performed their Hessentag replacement concert last night. Magne Furuholmen had brought a red umbrellay, but (for some reason) didn't use it on stage. Morten Harket was wearing a scarf for a change - maybe to avoid a new throat infection from performing outdoors.

Magne: "Live well while you can, have fun.."

Photo by Janne Møller-Hansen (VG). Magne painting in a hotel room in NY, when being on the Farewell tour with a-ha.

What do you want to do after the very last a-ha concert?
Magne laughs and answers he would like to have a vacation. And, adds he will continue working with music, with different people, and continue his 20 year long profession as visual artist.

What about Morten and Paul, will they continue making music as well?
Magne answers he thinks all of them will do that. They have made music for 25 years. It is not a job, but a part of your life.

Do you listen to your own music while painting?
Furuholmen answers ha cannot listen to his own music, but do listen to others music when painting.

What is the difference between the a-ha concerts 20-25 years ago and today?
Furuholmen answers he thinks they are now offering the best concerts they have ever done. And he thinks it is a good thing they do stop now.

It is a busy year. How do you manage to stay fit?
Furuholmen answers he tries to eat healthy. He does not drink, he does sports, and makes sure he gets enough sleep. And, he does things which are not directly related to the tour. He paints, which clears his head. He visits exhibitions and galleries. He talks to people. He doesn’t want to just think about the next concert.

About stardom
Furuholmen says it was never important to him to become a star. His father was a musician, and died very early. Magne explains it was natural for him to become a musician. He has never wanted to sit in an office from early morning to late evening. Live well while you can, have fun - that has always been his wish.

Cancelled a-ha concert replaced on June 6.!

According to NH24 a-ha's Hessentag (Stadtallendorf) concert is now finally decided being replaced on June 6th. These are really great news for the ones who missed a-ha on Sunday, because of Morten Harkets throat infection! By the way, there are still tickets avaiable in advance and at the door.

"To the bulk of American audiences, a-ha will always be remembered for its monster smash “Take On Me,” which landed at the top of the charts during its initial run and has since been spun on an average of 375 times a day. But to the rest of the world, especially in Europe, the group’s gone well beyond one hit wonder status to amass over 35 million albums sold throughout 25 years of packing arenas."

Kiel not cancelled!!!

From a-ha.com twitter:

To all the papers who made up fake news- we will go on stage in 15min

a-ha concert in Kiel tonight also cancelled ??

Morten is unfortunately still suffering from his throat infection. According to HNA tonight's concert in Kiel is also cancelled. However fans are reporting the concert is still on?

a-ha would like to replace the Hessentag concert on June 6th, but this depends on Mortens voice.

Update – release of new a-ha song ‘Butterfly’

a-ha's new (and last?) song 'Butterfly' will be included on a new updated “Best of” album ;-)

a-ha didn’t get famous because of their cute singer...

a-ha concert review from Trier: 16 Vor

First a-ha concert cancellation in 24 years

Morten Harket (50) is struggling with the voice and had to cancel yesterday’s concert in Hessentag in Germany. Harket, who along with rest of the band is on a Farwell Tour, is suffering from a virus infection in his throat and has lost his voice.

- We are hoping to replace yesterday’s concert with a new show on Sunday. That is what we are focusing on now, manager Harald Wiik says to VG Net.

Hoping for Kiel tomorrow

The plan is that a-ha is going on stage in Kiel tomorrow night, Tuesday.

- We believe it will turn out all right, and that we do not need to cancel any more concerts. However, we will need to evaluate the condition, Wiik says.
The band reports from Twitter: "Hello from the 'front'- Morten is well but can't sing- we are confident that he will be back in shape for Kiel!"

Not cancelled in 24 years

Barely two months have gone since Harket struggled with his voice in South-America. Still, it is a rare thing the Norwegian trio has to cancel.

- We had a few problems in South-America, but a-ha have not cancelled a gig since 1986. But Morten can, like everyone else, get a virus infection. That is impossible to protect onself against, according to Wiik.

The manager believes the outdoor concert last week marked the vocalist.

- The problem may have occurred because of draught. Mortens vocals are so demanding he is extra vulnerable, Wiik says, and adds Harket has been checked by a specialist.

Fans comforting

Also during the concert in Trier Saturday did the a-ha vocalist struggle with his voice, but he carried through. There have been lots of comments on the band’s web site from people who still brag about the concert experience despite Harket’s problems.

- One would preferably carry out as planned, but Morten is better now, so we hope for a replacement concert Sunday and that we do not need to cancel any more shows.
